Like Streeton, Roberts, Gruner, Johnson and other great Australian artists, learn the secrets of how to paint beautiful and exciting landscapes. This workshop is for keen artists with some experience who have mastered the basics and wish to move to higher levels. The course will cover tone, temperature, colour mixing, composition, atmosphere, reflected lights, reflections and other subtleties unique to our Australian landscape. The workshop will begin with a short theory session, followed by step by step demonstrations of each painting. Emphasis will be to attain the extra step to achieve a higher level of skill and competence in all areas especially in understanding the Australian Landscape and learning to see. Please bring your all your painting gear and as many questions as you wish to ask.

About John

John Wilson is a highly respected and sought-after artist/tutor and judge who has been painting for 50 years. He is one of Australia’s leading oil painters, a multi-award-winning artist who has had 49 solo exhibitions and participated in numerous group shows. John has exhibited in London, USA, Japan, Canada, Beijing China and Seoul Korea. His paintings are in collections throughout Australia and internationally. John’s works have been reproduced extensively, including several articles in Australian Artist and International Artists magazines. He was included in “Fifty Australian Artists” and the Fine Art Books John Wilson Blue Mountains Artist” 1988 and his second book “John Wilson – “The Journey Continues” published in 2014. Materials Required


This is an intermediate / advanced workshop. Please don’t disadvantage yourself by using cheaper brands. Many are incompatible with the techniques we will be using. Paints and brushes are available at the workshop.

  • Ultramarine Blue
  • Cadmium Scarlet
  • Yellow Ochre

Burnt Sienna, Viridian, Cadmium Yellow Pale, Cadmium Orange, Indian Yellow, Cerulean Blue, Burnt Umber, Indian Red plus a big tube of W&N Titanium White.


A good selection of Eterna 577 series hog hair brushes, No’s 16, 10, 8, 6. One Rowney Kolinski 101 sable – No4, and one pointed round size 2 or 3. Distilled Gum Turps and a dipper (for washes and as a medium) Odourless Turps or similar for washing brushes.
Canvas Boards. 2– 12” X 9”, 2 – 12” X 18”, 1 – 24” X 18”.

Please bring all you normal indoor (table easel) and outdoor painting kit including French Box easel, drying boxes, paints, 2 pallets, tissues, iPads, cameras etc.
