South West Rocks has beautiful family friendly beaches and coves

Whether it’s bathing in calm water, surfing, snorkelling, swimming in rockpools or body surfing; the beaches here have it all. The closest beach to BIG4 Sunshine is Trial Bay where the water is extremely calm and relaxing to swim in. It’s easy to spend all day bathing in the crystal clear aqua blue water. Trial Bay is a westerly facing cove and is perfect for children and families. It is incredible to watch the water turn golden with the setting of the sun – a rarity on the East Coast of Australia due to the shape of the bay. It is an ideal destination to relax, to take in a big deep breath and just enjoy watching the sunset.

It’s time to explore all the National Park has to offer

There is also so much to discover in Arakoon National Park which surrounds South West Rocks. It is a wonderful place for a day trip to explore the lush subtropical vegetation, Australian history and leafy picnic areas. Here you can watch whales breaching and pods of dolphins frolicking and the area is surrounded by beautiful granite foreshores and white sandy beaches to ensure a tranquil experience.

Trial Bay Gaol, dating from the 19th century, was built to house prison labourers who were tasked with building a breakwater. Today the gaol is a picturesque ruin and a fascinating place to discover. There are excellent fishing spots around the National Park’s rocky headlands and sheltered beaches.

Standing high on a narrow headland, Smoky Cape Lighthouse is surrounded by the stunning coastal scenery of Hat Head National Park. The lighthouse itself is as beautiful as the views – check out its winding staircase and octagonal tower. Built in 1891, this heritage lighthouse is one of the last designed by the Colonial Architect, James Barnet. Smoky Cape headland was so named by Captain Cook after he saw Aboriginal fires burning there in 1770. Guided tours of the breathtaking lighthouse are available if you would like to find out more. Smoky Cape is a superb spot for whale watching, bird watching and picnicking, Don’t miss the magnificent views at nearby Captain Cook’s lookout where you’ll be taken aback as you find these hidden gems.

South West Rocks is the gateway to one of Australia’s top dive sites, Fish Rock, a must-do if you’re a keen diver! Fish Rock is home to a completely unique ecosystem featuring Australia’s only true ocean cave running 125 metres right through the island and surrounded by a plethora of marine life including turtles, rays and the largest congregation of the friendly grey nurse sharks on the East Coast of Australia.
